Zapped to Zen™: Self-Care Strategies for a Birthing Person-Responsive Practice
(for doulas and perinatal professionals)

Date: May 4, 2023
Time: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

The triggering of old traumatic stress keeps us from being present to the needs of our current patient, and eventually accumulates as overwhelm and burnout. Doulas and perinatal professionals are trained to get through the moment of need, but it’s only through being IN the moment afterwards that we can regulate the animal brain through body awareness and action. We must learn to continuously digest the pressures of the day (as well as recognize our patient’s own triggered traumas) in order to provide robust responsiveness to the physical and emotional needs of the birthing person.
Objectives:

  • Objective 1: Attendees will develop a rudimentary understanding of how the animal brain impacts us in the moment of challenge and beyond.
  • Objective 2: Attendees will understand and practice mindful breathing and movement techniques for emotional regulation, including self-calming, anxiety and depression reduction.
  • Objective 3: Attendees will define and implement three essential elements of mindful emotional support in challenging situations: Awareness, Acceptance, and Appropriate Affect-ive Action. (22 minutes, teaching elements of 5-A Model of Emotional Recovery™ and engaging in guided practice of the 5 As)
